James Allen (16 October 1855) was born in [[wp>Wisconsin|Wisconsin]] to John and Lavina Allen.

He married [[jennie_belle_bloomer_1860|Jennie Belle Bloomer]] on 25 August 1878 in [[wp>Lebanon,_Kansas|Lebanon]], [[wp>Kansas|Kansas]].

====Residences====

James's first known residence was in [[wp>Jefferson,_Green_County,_Wisconsin|Jefferson]], [[wp>Green_County,_Wisconsin|Green County]], Wisconsin in July 1860.((1860 US Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MWM1-S4V)) His father died the month before, and in 1863, moved with his mother to Iowa.((1919 Obituary http://www.allengarrido.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=obituary:james_milton_allen_obituary_1918))

In 1870 he was living in [[wp>Belmont_Township,_Warren_County,_Iowa|Belmont]], [[wp>Warren_County,_Iowa|Warren County]], [[wp>Iowa|Iowa]] with his mother and brother John.((1870 US Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MDKS-Z3X)) In 1874 he and his mother moved to [[wp>Smith_County,_Kansas|Smith County]], Kansas.((1919 Obituary https://www.allengarrido.com/tree/doku.php?id=obituary:james_milton_allen_obituary_1918)) This is where he was in 1880 with his wife, mother, and first child, Bertha((1880 US Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MF5G-2PF)) who says they were living in a sod house.((1964 Obituary https://www.allengarrido.com/tree/doku.php?id=obituary:bertha_grace_allen_obituary_1964)) He lived two houses down from his father-in-law, and next door to his cousins Marquis Lafayette Allen and Henry Bascomb Allen. In 1900 the family lived in a rented house on First St. in [[wp>Assaria,_Kansas|Assaria]], Kansas.((1900 US Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MMYK-YF7)) By 1910, James had moved across half of Kansas to [[wp>Sherlock_Township,_Finney_County,_Kansas|Sherlock]], Kansas (a drive of over 3 hours today).((1910 US Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M2C4-BTP)) He was 53 years old and his youngest child was 2.

====Education====

Although no mention is made of James's education but it can be inferred that he was educated since he was literate, and in 1870 he was living with his brother John who, at that time, was a school teacher.((1870 US Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MDKS-Z3X)) In 1905 his last year of school is listed as 1876.((1905 Kansas Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP82-WPZX))

====Employment====

James's first known employment was as a Farmer in Smith County, Kansas.((1880 US Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MF5G-2PF)) In 1900 he was working in Assaria, Kansas as a minister.((1900 US Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MMYK-YF7)) In 1905 his employment was once again listed as farmer.((1905 Kansas Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP82-WPZX)) By 1910 he had moved across the state to work on a rented farm.((1910 US Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M2C4-BTP)) In 1915 he was listed as a minister with a home library of at least 50 volumes.((1915 Kansas Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QGYD-FY5V))

====Death====

James died 6 December 1918 of influenza.((1919 Obituary http://www.allengarrido.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=obituary:james_milton_allen_obituary_1918)) It is likely that this was the infamous [[wp>Spanish_flu|Spanish Flu]] that first gained notice in [[wp>Fort_Riley|Fort Riley]], Kansas earlier that year, and likely originated((Journal of Translational Medicine https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC340389/)) in [[wp>Haskell_County,_Kansas|Haskell County]], just south of [[wp>Finney_County,_Kansas|Finney County]] where James lived.
