He was married to [[sally_ann_rayl_1859|Sally Ann Rayl]] on 8 November 1878 in [[wp>Vermilion_County,_Illinois|Vermillion County]], Illinois.

In the summer of 1860, 2-year-old John was living in [[wp>Blount_Township,_Vermilion_County,_Illinois|Blount Township]], Illinois with his parents and 6-month-old brother Samuel.((1860 US Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MXH5-WF2))
Sometime after 1878 and 1880 he was married to Sally Ann Rayl in Vermillion County.((Marriage Index https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:HS4J-B16Z)) He lived in Blue Grass, Illinois (which no longer exists) in 1880.((1880 US Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MXKP-PKF)) Sometime between 1884 when his first son William was born and 1886 when his son Charles was born, he moved to [[wp>Kansas|Kansas]] where he stayed until at least 1885 when his daughter Josie was born.
