After four years in Chicago he moved to [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonner_Springs,_Kansas|Bonner Springs]], Kansas.

====Education====

The only mention of Paul's education is a census record indicating that at 14 he was not employed due to being a student, and that his highest level of education was the 6<sup>th</sup> grade.((1940 US Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VRVJ-SNL))

====Military Service====

Paul served the US Navy aboard the //[[wp>Auk-class_minesweeper|Auk]]//[[wp>Auk-class_minesweeper|-class minesweeper]] [[wp>USS_Spear_(AM-322)|USS]] //[[wp>USS_Spear_(AM-322)|Spear]]// as a fireman first class (F1).((Navy Training Course Certificate 1943 http://www.allengarrido.com/dokuwiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=paulallenf1.jpg)) In this position he would have served as something of a mechanic((Reddit comment thread https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/4tszl6/what_did_a_fireman_2nd_class_do_in_the_navy_in/)) as part of the Engine Room Force of the ship and earned $66 per month((US Navy pay chart 1942-1946 https://www.navycs.com/charts/1942-military-pay-chart.html)) (worth almost $960 in 2019).

The //Spear// sailed to [[wp>Hawaii|Hawaii]] in early 1944 where the crew trained and escorted troop convoys throughout the [[wp>Pacific_Ocean|Pacific]]. In July, Paul participated in the [[wp>Battle_of_Guam_(1944)|assault on Guam]] where the //Spear// came under fire.

In December, the //Spear// participated in the [[wp>Battle_of_Okinawa|assault on Okinawa]] conducting antisubmarine searches and sweeping mines. Paul spent 82 straight days serving in the Okinawa campaign, during which the //Spear// logged over 200 attacks by [[wp>Japan|Japanese]] airplanes. 

Following the [[wp>Surrender_of_Japan|Japanese surrender]] in 1945, the //USS Spear// cleared mines in the [[wp>East_China_Sea|East China Sea]] clearing the way to the [[wp>Yangtze|Yangtze River]]. The //Spear// was stationed in [[wp>Shanghai|Shanghai]], briefly joining the [[wp>Yangtze_Patrol|Yangtze River Patrol Force]], returning for [[wp>Pearl_Harbor|Pearl Harbor]], Hawaii in late November 1945((Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Spear_(AM-322) )).
