Stephen Burnett (26 September 1860) was born in Madison, Illinois to John Burnett and Amy Burnett.

He married Sarah Jane Decker on 23 December 1885 in Chariton, Missouri.

In 1860, the newborn Stephen was living with his parents and sisters in Mason City, Illinois.¹⁾ Before he was 2 years old his father mustered into the 85th Illinois Infantry Regiment. He died two years later at Kennesaw Mountain. It is unknown what happened to his family until 1880 when he is living with his sister Rebecca in Bucklin, Missouri.²⁾

Five years later Stephen married Sarah Jane Decker one county south in Chariton County, Missouri.³⁾ In 1900 they were living in Carroll County, Missouri with their six children.⁴⁾ By 1910 he had settled in Wichita, Kansas where he lived for the rest of his life.⁵⁾

There is no record of Stephen's education but he is listed as being able to read and write.⁶⁾

Stephen's first known employment was as a farm worker on his brother-in-law's farm in Missouri in 1880.⁷⁾ By 1900 he continued to be a farmer while raising his family.⁸⁾ In 1910, after he had moved to Wichita, his employment was listed as a “stationary engineer.”⁹⁾ In other sources his profession is listed as plumber and steam fitter.
